Hi! I'm Katie - also known as the runner of the forum. While searching the internet for a weaving forum I couldn't find one I really liked. So I made one and here it is! I am the admin, but I like my usual screen-name better Please feel free to look around and join!

Hello!
Glad to see that you have started a weaving forum. Thanks!
I've recently retired, moved from the frozen North to Savannah, GA and just purchased an 8-shaft Mighty Wolf. I have woven for over 30 years, but mostly on 4-shaft looms with infrequent opportunities to weave on more than 4. My dream is an AVL compu-dobby, but this is a good first step. Can anyone recommend books... or do you have drafts for 8 to share?

Re: Hello All!
Hello Anna, that is great, my grandmother lives in Savannah. We visited her only a while ago. Such interesting trees there... Have you been to their art school, SCAD? I think they have a fibres/textiles department.
Don't know what to say about 8 shaft drafts, I also use 4 shaft. But a book we often used in school was A Handweaver's Pattern Book by M. Davidson and it has designs for both 8 and 4.
As for myself, I finished studying textiles last year spring and working now at a clothing company putting prints onto cloth. In the evenings I study pattern drafting to make clothes and this Wednesday I will start private lessons in haute couture sewing ^^ I'd like to combine what I learned in textiles/weaving with clothing.

Re: Hello All!
Hi,
I consider myself a newbie even though I've been weaving for about 4 years. I'm looking forward to the topics.

Hello everyone
I'm a fairly new weaver, only a few years into it. I have 2 table looms, and one floor loom, and am trying different weaves, mostly 4 harness. One table loom is a 12 shaft, but I've only tried an 8 shaft weave so far.
I'm retired, living in Wyoming for the last 16 years. I also spin, knit and sew, also quilt, but mostly love fiber and what I can do with it.
There aren't many weavers out here, but a few, and we have one lady here who is an expert. Nice to have someone to call when you get stuck. But, I"m looking forward to this forum.

Re: Hello All!
Hi. My name is Debbie, I have been weaving for about 3 years. I took a class about 3 years ago at a local yarn shop. 2 hours every other Saturday for 4 classes. We learned the basics, figuring yarn yardage, cutting a warp and then warping front to back. We did a sampler of sorts, a scarf using wool and finally a small runner using linen. It was a get your feet wet type of class.
I am also a basket weaver (about 20 years).
I took a spinning class at the same yarns shop. I like spinning, I am not very good at it but found it fun. Just not sure I want to put the money out for a wheel yet.
I also subscribe to several weaving sites on yahoo.

Hello!
Hello, All!
I am glad to find a weaver's forum online. I'm from Charlotte, NC, and found out about you through the Piedmont Fiber Guild. I am weaving again after a 30-year hiatus (you know-- family, work, etc) I am a retired teacher and have just purchased a Mighty Wolf 8-harness. Found it for a tremendous bargain on Chicago Craigslist and had it shipped down here.
Anna, I have a good book for you: A Weaver's Book of 8-Shaft Patterns by Carol Strickler. You can get it from Amazon. I am starting my first project on the new loom -- dishtowels with a pattern called herringbone plaid.

Re: Hello All!
Gius...
I'm trying to figure out how to get in to visit the SCAD Fiber Dept. They have several AVL Looms there and I would love to see them in action -- besides seeing student work in a premier art school is always inspiring! A dream part-time job would be to be an assistant there in the weaving studios! Perhaps I'll contact the Dept Chair and see what I can come up with!
Is your grandmother into fibers? There is a really great yarn shop in Savannah on Liberty called WILD FIBRES.
Yes... the amazing live oak trees dripping with Spanish moss was AND SCAD were two of the reasons we chose to retire in Savannah.

Hello - new to forum
Hello from the mid-west! Nice to see a brand new forum about weaving -- I am always happy to read and learn from other weavers.
A little bit about myself; I love to weave everything from kitchen towels to Scottish tartans, to rag rugs and just about everything in between. Currently I own 2 floor looms - a 50 year old 4 shaft, 6 T Kessenich jack loom I named Thistle and a 5 year old 8 shaft 12 T Gilmore jack loom called Rose. Both my looms are named after my other passion in life - Renaissance period woman - specifically Queen Elizabeth I the original English Rose and Mary Queen of Scots - the Scottish Thistle, beautiful but very tough.
Lately I have been pining away for a Glimarka Standard 48 inch 8 shaft loom - the cost is way over my budget but I dream about this loom all the time and hope to find one eventually that I can afford --- although I would much rather purchase a brand new loom from JoAnne Hall's shop in Montana.
I am a great reader of weaving blogs and have learned so many things just from reading what others have written about, blogs are both entertaining and educational. Also thinking about possibly opening up a etsy site, not sure if that is something I wish to pursue or not.
I look forward to reading and sharing information with other weavers - but I must admit I am more of a lurker than a contributor.
Happy Weaving & Spinning, Martha

thanks!
Thanks everyone for the suggestion of the Handwoven 's A Weaver's Book of 8-Shaft Patterns -- I just ordered it! I set my first warp up with a reverse twill as it's something simple where I can start exploring possibilities. I'd like to try some summer and winter or block weaves next. It's great getting back into throwing a shuttle again! I've vowed to weave from my stash before buying more yarn... we'll see how long that lasts!
Ravelry .com has been a great source of inspiration. I discovered a great online weaving magazine called Weave-zine (http://www.weavezine.com) as one of the groups on Ravelry. There are groups for EVERY interest imaginable!

Re: Hello All!
Hi - I'm Mary and live in NJ. I'm brand new to weaving and just got my first loom about a month ago. I was able to attend a one week course at The Mannings and got the bug. I'm currently working on dishtowels, a practical place to start. My other passions are quilting and spinning.
